The Spanish Open or Open de España is no stranger to top golfing names. Distinguished former champions include Arnold Palmer, Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, and Nick Faldo. Started in 1912, the Spanish Open has seen its fair share of host nation winners. Most notably Angel de la Torre, who still holds the record for the most number of wins at six and most consecutive in Spanish Open history.

At the inception of the European Tour in 1972, the Spanish Open saw Spaniard Antonio Garrido win the top title . Since then more recent Spanish winners have included Seve Ballesteros, who scooped the top prize in 1981, 1985 and again ten years later in 1995. The last Spaniard to win the tournament on home soil was Sergio Garcia in 2002.
